Grass-fed beef liver: an old-fashioned supplement

Beef liver capsules are an unusual product in a shop full of extracts and blends. There is no formulation involved — it is a food, dried and encapsulated.

What it is

Liver from grass-fed cattle, freeze-dried or otherwise gently dried to preserve it, milled and put into capsules. Nothing is added and nothing is extracted.

Liver is one of the most nutrient-dense foods there is, which is precisely why it was a staple across most food cultures before it fell out of fashion. Desiccated liver was a common supplement decades before the modern industry existed.

Our capsules are halal.

Why people take it in capsules

Mostly because they will not cook it. Liver is cheap, but the taste and texture put most people off, and capsules remove that problem entirely.

It is worth being clear-eyed: a small number of capsules is not equivalent to a portion of liver. It is a modest amount of a dense food, not a replacement for eating it.

Who should be careful — this one matters

Liver is exceptionally high in preformed vitamin A (retinol), and vitamin A is fat-soluble, meaning the body stores rather than excretes the excess. That makes it one of the few supplements where more is genuinely not better.

If you are pregnant or may become pregnant, NHS advice is to avoid liver and liver products altogether, because high intakes of vitamin A can harm a developing baby. That advice applies to liver supplements as much as to liver on a plate.

If you already take a multivitamin or cod liver oil, check the vitamin A content of everything you take together rather than each in isolation.

If you have haemochromatosis or any condition affecting iron storage, liver is high in iron and you should speak to your doctor before taking it.

This is not boilerplate. It is the specific reason this product needs more thought than most.

How to take it

Follow the serving stated on the pack and do not exceed it. Store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.

Before you start

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle. Not suitable for children. Not suitable if you are pregnant or may become pregnant. If you are taking any medication or under medical supervision, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before use.
